Why a troy ounce is not an ounce
Precious metals are quoted per troy ounce, which is exactly 31.1034768 grams. The ordinary avoirdupois ounce used for food is about 28.35 g. They are different units with the same name, and dividing a spot price by the wrong one leaves you roughly 9% adrift — enough to put a borderline holding on the wrong side of the nisāb.
So the per-gram figure above is the spot price divided by 31.1034768, and the per-kilogram figure is that multiplied by a thousand. The same constant is used by the calculator and by the iOS app — it is defined once and imported, never retyped.
What this means for your zakat
The gold nisāb is 85 g, so at today's price that threshold is 10.194 € in EUR on the AAOIFI (85g gold / 595g silver) standard. Wealth at or above the governing nisāb, held for a lunar year, is zakatable at 2.5%.
